The Player's Club, in New York city, was fashioned after the Garrick Club in London, by Edwin Booth, who was considered the greatest Shakesperian actor of his day. His portrayals of Hamlet, Macbeth, Brutus, Richard III, Iago, Shylock, Othello, Cardinal Richelieu earned him international renown across America, Europe, and as far off as Australia.
The Players can boast of three Nobel Prize winners: Eugene O'Neill, Ernest Hemingway, and John Steinbeck. |
