As you go deeper into the Luberon Hills, you see great stands of ancient olive trees with their silver green leaves and gnarled branches "glowing" in the Provencal light like no where else on earth.
While I think it is hard not to think about the beautiful green oil their fruit produces I also see the trees on the canvas as an enduring symbol of this most beautiful region.

La Vieux Ville / Roussillon Acrylic on Canvas 36" X 48" Mural $3,200 |

I arrive in Roussillon, now the summer colony of the Parisian rich but once famous as a town where the minerals and oxides were mined to produce the oil paints the artists in turn used to capture the special colors of the area. A very symbiotic process. Shop Window / Aix-en Provence Acrylic, Gouache on Paper |

Cezanne. To think for years Aix failed to honor its most important resident. The town is infused with his presence. The Studio; the road to the Mountain; the Cour Mirabeau. He still wanders its streets and sits in its cafes. I can only say that being there will always rejuvenate my artistic energies.

Maybe the beauty of the stained glass windows in the Cathedral at Chartres were not only used to tell the ancients the story of their God but also was the original source of the color that radiates throughout the whole country. Maybe it all started here. l'Evre / Chartres Acrylic on Canvas |

The colors from the windows shown on Provence and the light there filtered it into the softest hues of sienna, pink and yellow, it hit the Mediterranean and turned it turquoise. It certainly works along the Evre as it wends through the town behind the Cathedral.
