The Self Portrait
THE ARTIST AS MODEL
For ages, along with the advent of the mirror, artists have modeled for themselves in the making of their own works of art.
Sometimes it is simply because as a model, the artist is clearly the most economic and available. Or perhaps it is an in-depth exploration of the artists' own psyche.
Whatever the reason, nearly every artist, in every medium: draughtsmen and painters and printmakers and sculptors have attempted this exploration of the self. Among other factors, McConney explores the many different kinds of self-portraits in order to understand the why of it, as well as, the personal value of a self-portrait.
